- Start with the counters – clearing clutter on the counters should be your first step. Look for anything that doesn’t belong in the kitchen, such as junk mail, someone’s favourite toy, your makeup kit, etc. You will need the space to clean and clutter only gets in the way.
- Fill the sink with hot water – and don’t forget to add a few drops of dish soap. Drop in the items that require soaking, such as the crisper drawer, the dish rack or that messy microwave turntable.
- Empty the fridge – next stop is emptying the refrigerator. Look for foods way past their expiry date and dispose of them. Throw the dirty storage containers into the sink. Work from top to bottom to wipe the shelves with a paper towel or a non-toxic all-purpose cleaner.
- Dust the high zones – don’t worry about the dirt and dust at this point. Just use a duster or a ladder to get around the upper areas, as they accumulate a lot of dust.
- Clean the cabinets – much like the fridge, you should clear the contents and give the area a good wipe. Here you will also need to wipe the exterior.
- Clean the microwave – spray the interior with a cleaning solution and leave it there for 5 minutes while you address other tasks. Wipe the interior after that with a clean cloth.
- Load the dishwasher – another thing you can do while dealing with other tasks is to load the dishwasher with all of the items that were previously soaking in the sink. Don’t drain it just yet.
- Clean small appliances – your stand mixer, coffee maker, toaster and other such small appliances aren’t going to clean themselves. Use an all-purpose spray for the job. Things like dip trays and crumb catchers should go in the sink.
- Clean large appliance exterior – the front of your fridge, oven and dishwasher all need cleaning. Use a clean cloth and sudsy water for the job.
- Clean the lower cabinets – you can once again use a damp soapy cloth for the job.
- Drain and clean the sink – at this point, you should drain and clean the sink with hot water. Use a mild abrasive cleaner and a microfibre cloth to get the grime out.
- Tackle the floor – use a vacuum cleaner to remove all of the dust and debris you previously knocked there. Follow that up with a mop and bucket, and you can call it a day.
By following this route of cleaning your kitchen, you can achieve the best results. You will find that it is quite an effective way of tackling this room.
