- Low pile carpets/area rugs – a beater bar attachment to your vacuum cleaner is what works best for keeping low pile carpets and area rugs clean. Essentially, this is a rotating brush, also referred to as turbo brush, which stirs debris from the bottom of the carpet so the suction function can do its work. Normally, it is canister and upright vacuum cleaners that have beater bars.
- Thick carpets/area rugs – when it comes to vacuum cleaning a thick carpet or area rug, you cannot rely on the canister and upright vacuum cleaners. What you need for them is an electric power vacuum with good suction. You will do well to give the rugs a good shake outside before you attempt any cleaning service. Don’t forget to call in professionals once or twice a year to deal with carpets.
- Tiled floors – cleaning tile floors with a hose and floor brush is the way to go. It is somewhat risky to use an upright vacuum cleaner with a power brush on tiled floors. The reason is that the wheels can mark the tile. Besides, the spinning brush roll may actually spit back as much dust as it picks up.
- Delicate rugs – many rugs out there require special care. If you want to be safe, you should clean them with an air-driven powerhead, or perhaps a floor brush with straight suction.
- Stairs – for carpeted stairs, you should think about the style and weight of your vacuum. Imagine climbing the staircase with a heavy upright vacuum – not the most fun thing to do. You should use a lightweight vacuum to deal with carpeted stairs. If there is no carpet on the stairs, you should use the upholstery attachment of the vacuum to ‘dust’ the stairs.
